Mkhuze: Sunset Lingerers

Talk about the unexpected. Firstly I assumed Mkhuze was a close cousin of the Hluhluwe/Umfolozi brothers. Turns out more like the poor cousin. The road in is 20km of of corrugated red dirt, through dry koppies and rural settlements. That should have been the give away, we were in for a treat. Mkhuze allows you to feel like you are truly in the bush, connected with with all good things that go with “the wild”. Large tracts of the park have been burnt, waiting for the promise of rain and new life. The rest is dense but dry. No good for spotting elusive beasts. Just when you think you’ll go home empty handed the Nsumo pan appears and blows your mind, sensory overload. Our first night we toasted the sunset, gazed at the birds and slipped our minds into neutral. Ooops. On the way home we set off every motion camera in the park. Sure the rangers were shaking their heads, pondering what kind of a beast Florence could be……………………….

The little chalets were having their hair did so we were upgraded to a house. Treat. As Susie firestix was busy conquering Rodrigues Island, I had to take over the fire making duties. We managed, but I do miss the Jack tracker braai experts. 3 Bush babies visited and were far more polite than the dreaded Cape Vidal monkeys moving off when they realised there’d be no free meal.

The Park guide was on leave so we connected with Bhekie who took us for a walk outside the park. There is beef with the Park guides and the community guides. So ridiculous but it is what it is. Carol has decided to take up birding so was designated as the Admin Support, responsible for bird list ticking. The area is a birders paradise. #needtogoback
