Kruger: Let the game of birds begin

The professional birder has joined the group. Greg started this season of Game of Birds at a clear advantage. However, Brett’s superior spotting skills soon placed him as a contender to the throne. Especially as he has an uncanny knack of finding the pygmy kingfisher in the most unusual places. #neverseenonemyself

The Fox’s joined us at Letaba and were lucky enough to have a special sighting of a leopard in a tree. There was loads of game around and the veld is taking a pounding. Elephant are a dime a dozen, almost as many as the impala. Not sure how the Park will be able to manage the delicate balance of conservation.

So it was Letaba, Bateleur and then the sheer colonial luxury of Mockford House at Pafuri. Home of the WENELA employment bureau of years gone by. Timothy, who used to cook for our family, left to seek his fortune on the mines via the WENELA system. Commuting. Except they didn’t have they luxury of flights home and decent working conditions.

The fever tree forest and crooks corner have to be some of the best places on this earth. Soul food for sure. Amidst the beauty and tranquility, a harsh reminder of our brutal humanity. The elephant calf/teenager in the photo below has lost it’s trunk to a snare apparently. Who knows the miserable end that awaits.
